Using a movie- rather than a photo camera, David Joosten profiles himself not as a fashion-photographer, but as a fashion-cinematographer. Exemplifying this is his graduate project Infinite Symmetry, a looped panorama movie. In it, fashion models pose on slowly rotating platforms, or solemnly walk up and down a staircase. The designs they model play with symmetry; the poses they strike refer to Da Vinci’s symmetrical study the Vitruvian Man. Joosten successfully blurs the boundary between fashion photography and film — remaining admirably consistent, even the invitation for his graduation exhibition was a continuously looped film rather than a motionless photo.
