According to Dennis van Gaalen, research shows that, on average, the modern day city dweller is as irritable as a highly distressed laboratory animal. Luckily, there is a very good remedy: spend more time in a natural environment. To encourage more people to spend time in nature, Van Gaalen designed a series of Happy Faces: infographics in the style of primitive masks.
Each of the ten masks he designed is a visualisation of information regarding a specific monumental tree in Rotterdam. A booklet accompanying the masks offers additional comments. Both pleasantly designed and contagiously well meant, it’s easy to imagine these masks in botanical gardens and city parks.
