Leerssen did research after the
position of ‘the working man’: the man who changed from a handyman with tools, into a person who regards tools as a status symbol, –objects of desire even. She developed her idea of ‘dirt’ as part of the male identity after she saw the effect of coal dust on the clothes of mineworkers. The prints she knitted into sweaters were derived from rugby scrum sessions. The clothes of the rugby players
were dusted with pigments, and the patterns they made during the game were digitalized and made into a knitting pattern for a collection of beautiful sweaters.
