Using a broad array of media to realize his work, Gert-Jan Oosting creates narrative illustrations and animations that testify his strong preference for dramaturgy. Not confining himself solely to the role of illustrator, Oosting directed, edited and acted in the movie Over Last (the title is a Dutch pun, meaning both ‘concerning burdens’ and ‘nuisance’). For his cartoon Twee Chinezen (Chinese Couple), Oosting wrote the scenario himself. Touching is the drawing De Begrafenisauto (The Hearse) Oosting made in the aftermath of his mothers’ passing. It depicts how Oosting emotionally perceived his surroundings’ tendency to return to everyday life — partying, even — much quicker than he was able to do: his mothers’ death creating, so to speak,
a traffic jam.
