Jef Montes dedicated his collection to his Spanish grandmother, with whom he used to visit the cathedral in her hometown Tarragona. The square piece of cloth forms the basis of these clothes. Inspired by this Catholic background he folded his fabrics into the pure, symmetrical shapes that are characteristic of Roman Catholic clothing. The image of the crying Madonna led to the development of a fabric with a wet look: a satin duchesse with a glass fibre top layer. Bodysuits suggest chastity; sandals covered in the feet of the bodysuit suggest walking on tiptoe. Montes also used his Basque beret as an inspiration and turned it into a ‘halo’. His colours were derived from porcelain Maria figurines, rosaries and traditional clerical colours.
