In an attempt to inspire and help each other, the graduating students working on Icy Trouble and SneakSneak decided to share a classroom. A smart idea, considering the fact that both teams were working on ‘co-op multiplayer platformers — running and jumping games designed for two simultaneous players. But despite their shared workspace and genre, the games have little in common.
Icy Trouble pits two players against a huge amount of enemies, and provides them with a wide range of weapons to fight these enemies off. The ice-beam, for example, which turns penguins into ice cubes that a player can climb onto. Besides the ice-beam, the arsenal includes spears, chainsaws, even atom bombs — collaboratively play-testing the weaponry makes the game very enjoyable.
In contrast, SneakSneak demands two players to sneak cautiously trough the game world. Without cooperating, the players won’t get far; together, they can climb higher, or even throw each other trough walls. This game is about the shared devising of a strategy: continuous deliberation with your fellow player is essential for survival.
The animations were made by Martijn Calkhoven, Tom Clercx, Thijs Koole and Laurens van Walbeek; Jesper Ankarfeldt did the sound design.
