Nina Paim enrolled in the Rietveld academy as an exchange student from Brazil. The autonomous, critical approach she encountered in the Graphic Design department pleased her so, that she decided to, as it were, take it back with her to her native country. She initiated the Escola Aberta — Open School in Portuguese — a provisional academy shaped after the spirit of the Rietveld Academy. Besides the practicalities of organising said mini-academy last august, Paim developed the theoretical content of the Escola, and designed all related visual matter. Forty Dutch and sixty Brazilian graphic designers took part in the Escola.
