The technique of mapping has been growing in popularity amongst graphic designers over the last few years as an effective way of conveying a message. Noortje van Eekelen puts the method to dry comical effect by creating a visual database of the Eurocrisis — or rather, the members of governments involved. She puts on display, amongst others, Carla Bruni’s handbag collection; Berlusconi’s ‘girlfriends’ in erotic poses; and the confrontingly elaborate sequence ‘Mark Rutte laughs about something’. The excess of interchangeable images, accompanied by meagre comments, makes it hard to suppress a chuckle. Even Angela Merkel’s blazers — not much fun when seen separately — turn out to be amusing when they’re in great numbers, organized on colour.
