Robin Smits managed to purchase a second-hand cutting plotter. He replaced the knife with a marker, baptized the machine ‘Gerben’, and made it draw letters. After a while, Robin noticed Gerben was rather noisy while drawing – the noises uniquely linked to different letters. Shifting his focus from designing letters, Robin set about designing the sounds Gerben could produce. This resulted in a practically unreadable font – but also an ‘alphabet’ of sounds. During the graduation show, Gerben the Drawing machine gave a daily live performance.
